2013 Hossfeld Merlot

Tasting Notes

The 2013 is medium ruby colored with captivating aromas of black plum, smoke, anise, angelica root, cedar, dried herbs and tobacco. It is lavishly textured with deep, dense fruit flavors of wild plums, blueberries, cassis and nectarines as well as hints of baking spice. This wine is rich and intense on the palate with well integrated tannins and a long finish. This Merlot thinks it's a Cab!

The Vineyard

Hossfeld vineyard is located in the eastern hills of Napa Valley, 1500 feet above the valley floor where steep terraces have been chiseled into the bedrock of Soda Canyon. Each hole had to be dynamited in order to plant and the vines produce low yield, high quality grapes from these stressed growing conditions. The heat from Soda Canyon radiates up the hillside and keeps the rocks warm into the early evening. The vineyard receives lots of morning sun and the afternoon breezes and southern exposure create remarkable grapes with intense color and beautiful red fruit flavors.
